On the Fundraising Trail: Silicon Valley Here I Come

by Glenn Matthews on November 29, 2009

This week just gone has produced some mixed results; mostly positive. Any result at all during a holiday week (it was Thanksgiving on Thursday here in the States) is something to be proud of.

The most exciting news for the week was to see MySchoolAct move into the top 10 stage of its Australian competition. As noted in a recent post, entries for acts are now closed and the exciting news is that we exceeded our target number of acts. I’m also very pleased with the number of registered fans we have – the number by far exceeded my expectations.

Entries Flood in for MySchoolAct

by Glenn Matthews on November 27, 2009

At midnight last night (Friday, Sydney time) MySchoolAct closed entries to its inaugural season. The final week saw a rush of entries, making a very difficult task for senior staff to choose the two wild cards.

Our Managing Director, Cameron Elkins and Business Development Manager, James Smith did a fantastic job attracting acts and running the whole competition. Well done gents!

Sony Music chipped in to help promote MySchoolAct, providing interviews with Amy Meredith, Amy Pearson and The Cassette Kids. Even Guy Sebastian gave us a shout out from a studio in Los Angeles. Check out the video below.

On The Fundingraising Trail: Let’s Make Some Calls

by Glenn Matthews on November 23, 2009

I’m a little late with this post. But hopefully the wait was well worth it as I do have some good news to share.

Yesterday ended Global Entrepreneurship Week, a week long program, celebrating entrepreneurs and encouraging free thinking within our youth. The goals of the week are to Inspire, Connect, Mentor and Engage. As an interesting coincidence the early goals of MySchoolAct were to Inspire, Educate, Create and Celebrate. Personally I think MySchoolAct’s goal’s are much more catchier,  and so they should be, after all we are in the entertainment industry.

Daily Inspiration

by Glenn Matthews on November 19, 2009

Today I thought I would share with you a source of my inspiration; a reason to sit at my desk and continually plug away each day for countless hours.

On my wall, sitting in clear view, I have four pieces of paper. They read:

Determination
At times it takes sheer will to overcome adversity.

Innovation
The best way to predict the future is to create it.

Passion
A powerful force that cannot be stopped.

Perseverance
The greater the obstacle, the more glory in overcoming it.

How to Pick the right Idea for a Business

by Glenn Matthews on November 18, 2009

Choosing an idea for a business seems easy, but choosing the “right” idea is somewhat harder. Most serial entrepreneurs will think of an idea on a weekly if not daily basis. If time permits, they will develop that idea, spending countless hours drawing up diagrams of how the product will work, how the business will be structured; all without research of whether the market will accept their idea.

On The Fundingraising Trail: Introduction

by Glenn Matthews on November 12, 2009

Motivation to carry out a task is backed by the want to do it (whether it’s through the want of personal satisfaction, personal glory, or a sence self worth) and the need to do it (a need to generate an income or a need to fit into society as a contributor to progress).

I’ve previously written about my involvment in MySchoolAct, but for those of you who are unfamiliar with the company, here’s my elevator pitch:

Be More Like Amazon

by Glenn Matthews on November 11, 2009

If you run an e-commerce website, or you just want to boost your companies profits: Be More Like Amazon.

You may not know this but in 2008, within the middle of the global economic downturn, Amazon turned over $19,166,000,000 (that’s $19 billion and some change if all of the zero’s are becoming a blur). What’s more, in 2008 their turnover increased 29% from 2007…… are the executives at Amazon asking themselves “what recession?”
